This week marks the start of the Paris Olympics, and I can’t wait. For the next few weeks you’ll find me watching coverage as much as possible, and I’ll have tissues ready because the emotional strength and perseverance in athlete stories always get to me.
In many ways, these traits are the key to success in a long-term loving, healthy relationship, too. As we gear up for the Olympics to start, here are some inspired tips for building a vibrant connection.
1. "Swim Together: Communication Is Key" In artistic swimming (aka synchronized swimming!), verbal and non-verbal communication is key. Same goes for our intimate relationships. Just as swimmers coordinate their strokes to move efficiently through water, couples must be open with thoughts and feelings to navigate challenges and celebrate victories together. Regularly check in with each other, actively listen, and be open and honest to ensure your relationship stays on course.
2. "Run the Race: Set Goals Together" Track and field athletes set specific goals and work tirelessly to achieve them. Similarly, setting shared goals in your relationship gives you a sense of direction and purpose. Whether it's planning a future vacation or supporting each other's career ambitions, having common goals strengthens your bond and motivates you to grow together. Celebrate when you cross the finish line as an individual or a team!
3. "Gymnastic Balance: Find Equilibrium in Your Lives" Gymnasts master balance, agility, and flexibility to perform complex routines flawlessly. Just like gymnasts, a couple needs to flex their balancing muscles all the time. Juggling work, personal life, hobbies, and time together requires careful coordination. Prioritize self-care and mutual support, striving for a harmonious blend of individual pursuits and shared activities. Just like gymnasts, maintaining equilibrium will help you perform at your best both individually and as a couple.
4. "Archery Aim: Focus on Each Other" Archers demonstrate precision and focus when aiming for the target. In relationships, focusing on each other's needs and desires is core to feeling connected. Practice empathy, be present in conversations, and show appreciation for each other's strengths. By aiming your attention towards nurturing your relationship, you strengthen your bond and build a foundation of trust and respect.
5. "Team Spirit: Support Each Other Through Ups and Downs" Team sports like volleyball or basketball thrive on teamwork, encouragement, and resilience. Similarly, supporting each other through life's challenges strengthens your relationship. Be each other's cheerleader during setbacks, celebrate successes together, and tackle obstacles as a united front. Embrace teamwork in decision-making, compromise when needed, and cultivate a supportive environment where both partners feel valued and empowered.
Olympic athletes have to work every day to reach their goals and the reality is, so do couples. As the Olympics start, think about these tips and what you can easily integrate into your relationship today!
